Colposcopy – Rs.6000/-
A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure used to get a closer, highly magnified look at the cervix, vagina, and vulva. It is most commonly recommended after an abnormal Pap smear or HPV test to check for precancerous changes or other conditions.
Why is it done?
While a Pap smear screens for abnormal cells, a colposcopy is a follow-up to diagnose the problem. It helps your doctor identify:
- Cervical dysplasia (precancerous cell changes).
- Genital warts or HPV-related changes.
- Cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix).
- Polyps or noncancerous growths.

Diseases Detected Early
* Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 1, 2, 3)
* Early cervical cancer
* HPV-related cervical changes
* Chronic cervicitis
* Cervical polyps
* Vascular abnormalities
How is Colposcopy Done? (Step-by-Step)
Duration: 10–20 minutes*
Is It Painful?
* ❌ No anesthesia required
* Mild discomfort only
* Biopsy may cause slight pinching pain
* Most women tolerate it very well
Who Should Not Undergo Colposcopy?
* Active heavy menstrual bleeding
* Advanced pregnancy (relative contraindication)
* Acute pelvic infection (temporarily postponed)
What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure is performed in a doctor’s office and usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.
-
Setup: You will lie on an exam table with your feet in stirrups, just like a regular pelvic exam.
-
The Speculum: A speculum is inserted to hold the vaginal walls open.
-
Magnification: The doctor uses a colposcope—a special magnifying instrument with a light. Crucially, the colposcope stays outside your body.
-
Applying Solutions: The doctor will swab your cervix with a vinegar-like solution (acetic acid) or iodine. This may cause a mild stinging or burning sensation. These liquids make abnormal cells turn white or change color so they are easier to see.
-
Biopsy (if needed): If the doctor sees suspicious areas, they may take a tiny sample of tissue (a biopsy). You might feel a sharp pinch or mild cramp during this step.
Post-Test Instructions
* Mild spotting is normal
* Avoid intercourse for *3–5 days if biopsy*
* Report heavy bleeding or fever (rare)
👉 *Early CIN is 100% curable*
Importance in Public Health
* Cervical cancer is *preventable & curable*
* India has high burden due to late detection
* Colposcopy bridges *screening → diagnosis → treatment*
